Cevdet Kudret’in Süleyman’ın Dünyası Üçlemesinde Epigraf

Abstract

Epigraf, eserin başında veya giriş bölümlerinde yer alan, eser hakkında ön bilgi içerip eserin ana fikrini özetleyen, kısa veya uzun alıntılardan oluşan yazılardır. Edebî eserlerde epigraf, metnin temasını gösterme, ait olduğu dönemi hissettirme ve metnin yorumlanmasına katkı sağlama gibi çeşitli gerekçelerle kullanılan bir tekniktir. Ayrıca epigraf, metinlerarasılık tekniğinin açık göstergelerinden biri olarak metni diğer metinlerle ilişkilendirme imkânı sunan bir özelliğe sahiptir. Bu özellikleri sayesinde epigraf, metnin anlamını yönlendiren bir araç olarak işlev görür. Cevdet Kudret’in Süleyman’ın Dünyası üst başlığıyla yayımlanan Sınıf Arkadaşları (1943), Havada Bulut Yok (1958) ve Karıncayı Tanırsınız (1976) adlı romanlarında bu tekniğe sıklıkla başvurulmuştur. Türk romanında bilinen yönlerinden farklı olarak epigraf tekniği Cevdet Kudret’in üçlemesinde sistematik ve işlevsel yönüyle dikkati çekmektedir. Üçlemede epigraf, metnin başında yer alan ama eserle birlikte ilerleyen, süreklilik gösteren ve okurun anlam üretimine doğrudan katılan bir kurucu öğe işlevinde kullanılır. Bu çalışmada epigrafın metin içindeki anlamı, kurguya katkısı ve üstlendikleri işlev ayrıntılı biçimde değerlendirilmeye çalışılacaktır. Çalışmada epigraflar işlevleri, ait oldukları edebî ve yazınsal türler ile kökenleri bakımından sınıflandırılarak çözümlenecektir. Çalışmada hem Cevdet Kudret’in romancılığına dair değerlendirmelere hem de edebî metinlerde epigraf tekniğinin kullanımına dair bir bakış açısı sunmak hedeflenmektedir.

The Epigraph in Cevdet Kudret's Süleyman’ın Dünyası (Suleyman's World) Trilogy

Abstract

An epigraph is a short or long text, often placed at the beginning of a work or one of its sections, that provides preliminary information about the work and summarizes its main idea. In literary works, epigraphs serve various functions, such as introducing the themes of the text, conveying the period to which it belongs, and contributing to the interpretation of the text. Furthermore, as a clear indicator of intertextuality, the epigraph connects the text with other texts. Thanks to these features, the epigraph functions as a tool that guides the meaning of the text. Cevdet Kudret frequently employs this technique in his novels Süleyman’ın Dünyası (Suleyman's World), Sınıf Arkadaşları (Classmates) (1943), Havada Bulut Yok (No Clouds in the Sky) (1958), and Karıncayı Tanırsınız (You Know the Ant) (1976). Unlike its known aspects in Turkish novels, the epigraph technique in Cevdet Kudret's trilogy is noteworthy for its systematic and functional aspects. In the trilogy, the epigraph functions as a constitutive element, a narrative layer that appears at the beginning of the text but continues throughout the work, demonstrating continuity and directly participating in the reader's meaning-making. This study will attempt to evaluate in detail the meaning of the epigraph within the text, its contribution to the narrative structure, and the functions it performs. In this study, epigraphs will be classified and analyzed according to their functions, the literary genres to which they belong, and their origins. The aim of this study is to offer both an assessment of Cevdet Kudret's novels and a perspective on the use of epigraphic techniques in literary texts.
