Democracy and Economic Growth Relationship in Transition Economies: Panel Data Analysis

Abstract

Whether there is a right relationship between democracy and economic growth are frequently discussed in the literature. On the basis of these discussions, democracy is one of the important institutional determinants of economic growth. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the relation between economic growth and democracy in transition economies. For this purpose, the relationship is analyzed by panel data analysis method using annual data between 1995-2015 period. According to the results of the analysis, there is a long term bi-directional causality relationship between democracy and economic growth. It is observed that while the developments in the democracies in the transition countries increase the economic growth, the economic growth also affects the development of the democracy positively.
