Content Knowledge of Pre-Service Teachers Regarding Concepts on the Probability: Discrete-Continuous Events, Dependent-Independent Events
Abstract
The aim of the study was to examine the content knowledge of pre-service teachers regarding basic concepts on the subject of probability. In this respect, the most confusing concepts in the subject of probability, discrete, continuous, dependent, and independent events were addressed. The study participants included 40 pre-service teachers studying in the 3rd grade of elementary mathematics teaching program of a state university. A form consisting of four open-ended questions was used as the data collection tool. Interviews were held by taking sound recording with a semi-structured interview technique. In addition, preservice teachers’ documents related to examination papers were examined to provide data diversity. The case study method based on the qualitative approach was used in the study in the analysis of the data, qualitative data analysis techniques were used. Based on the findings obtained as a result of this study, it was found out that the content knowledge of most of the pre-service teachers was inadequate about the concepts of discrete-continuous event and dependent-independent event and they confused these concepts.
