The Effect of Foreign Direct Investments on the Unemployment: The Application of Turkey (1980‐2016)

Abstract

There are many studies examining the effect of foreign direct investment on unemployment in the economy literature. When these studies are examined, it is seen that foreign direct investments effect unemployment both positively and negatively. In this study, the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on the unemployment in Turkey have been analyzed by Johansen cointegration test and Granger causality test method using the data between 1980-2016. According to the empirical findings of the study, there was a negative and statistically significant relationship between FDI and unemployment in the long run. In other words, the increase in FDI in the long run decreases unemployment. According to the results of the Granger causality test, there is no relationship between FDI and unemployment in the short term.

Doğrudan Yabancı Yatırımların İşsizlik Üzerine Etkisi: Türkiye Uygulaması (1980-2016)

Abstract

İktisat literatüründe doğrudan yabancı yatırımların işsizlik üzerindeki etkisini inceleyen birçok çalışma bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmalar incelendiğinde, doğrudan yabancı yatırımların işsizliği hem olumlu hem de olumsuz yönde etkilediği görülmektedir. Bu çalışmada doğrudan yabancı yatırımların (DYY) Türkiye’de işsizlik üzerindeki etkisi, 1980-2016 dönemi verileri kullanılarak Johansen eşbütünleşme testi ve Granger nedensellik testi yöntemiyle analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın ampirik bulgularına göre, uzun dönemde DYY ile işsizlik arasında negatif ve istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmuştur. Bir diğer ifadeyle uzun dönemde DYY’da meydana gelen artış işsizliği azaltmaktadır. Granger nedensellik testi sonuçlarına göre ise kısa dönemde DYY ile işsizlik arasında bir ilişki tespit edilememiştir.
