Byzantine and Sassanian Competition in International Trade in the 5th and 7th Centuries
Abstract
The vast lands of Asia, Africa and Europe were divided between the Byzantine and Sassanian empires, the two great powers of the Early Middle Ages in the 5th and 7th centuries. These two empires fought for strategically important regions for several centuries. A big part of the Byzantine-Sassanian wars was related to economic reasons and the main purpose was to control the world trade.
This study investigates the key points of the commercial competition between the Byzatine and Sassanian empires for the "Great Silk Road" with a particular focus on the affiliation of the Turkish Khaganate. The study aims to reveal the reasons for the mentioned commercial competition and the results for the countries under the auhority of these empires.
