Year 2024, Volume: 12 Issue: 3, 966 - 987
https://doi.org/10.18506/anemon.1481507

Abstract

Year 2024, Volume: 12 Issue: 3, 966 - 987
https://doi.org/10.18506/anemon.1481507

Abstract

Gambling behavior, which constitutes a type of behavioral addiction, brings many negativities in different aspects of individuals' lives. Accordingly, this research aims to reveal the biopsychosocial consequences of gambling behavior with a holistic approach. This research was designed with qualitative method and phenomenological approach. In this direction, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 28 individuals with problematic gambling and 10 family members suffering from gambling problems, and the data were analyzed from a holistic perspective using the MAXQDA (2022, PRO) program. As a result of the study, 5 themes and 14 sub-themes under these themes were presented. These themes were presented as economic losses, loss of sociality, loss of family, loss of health and loss of life as a series of losses. As a result of the study, it was concluded that individuals and family members who gamble experience losses at important points in their lives, and it was revealed that it would not be sufficient to address the issue in a single aspect and that it is necessary to approach it in a holistic manner in terms of biological, psychological and social aspects. On the other hand, it is recommended to carry out professional studies at the point of treatment together with preventive-protective studies.
