Abstract

Osmanlı Devleti’nde kaleler, sadece askerî birer savunma noktası değil, aynı zamanda çevrelerindeki hinterland ile sıkı ekonomik ve idarî bağlara sahip olan stratejik merkezlerdir. Bu minvalde Gelibolu Kalesi, XV. yüzyılın sonlarında Osmanlı Devleti’nin Trakya toprakları ve Ege’deki deniz güvenliği açısından önemli bir rol üstlenirken, kaledeki muhafızların geçim kaynakları büyük ölçüde Gelibolu sancağına bağlı Malkara Kazası’ndan sağlanması dikkat çekmektedir. Bu durum, kalenin bölgesel bir destek ağı ile ayakta tutulduğunu ve hinterland olarak Malkara’nın Gelibolu’nun askerî yapısını desteklediğini göstermektedir. Bu çalışmada, tahrir defterlerinden ve dönemin mühimme kayıtlarından hareketle Gelibolu Kalesi ile Malkara Kazası arasındaki ekonomik ve idarî bağlantı incelenmiştir. Böylece, Osmanlı taşra yapısında kaleler ile hinterlandları arasındaki bağlantıların nasıl işlediği ve bu yapıların birbirini nasıl desteklediği Gelibolu Kalesi üzerinden ortaya konulmuştur.

A CASTLE, A HINTERLAND: THE ECONOMIC AND ADMINISTRATIVE TIES BETWEEN GALLIPOLI CASTLE AND THE DISTRICT OF MALKARA FROM THE LAST QUARTER OF THE FIFTEENTH CENTURY TO THE MIDDLE OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY

Abstract

In the Ottoman Empire, castles were not merely military defense points, but also strategic centers with strong economic and administrative ties to their surrounding hinterlands. In this regard, while Gelibolu Castle played an important role in the late 15th century in terms of the Ottoman Empire's Thracian territories and maritime security in the Aegean, it is noteworthy that the livelihood of the castle's guards was largely provided by the Malkara District, which was part of the Gelibolu Sanjak. This situation shows that the castle was sustained by a regional support network and that Malkara, as the hinterland, supported the military structure of Gelibolu. This study examines the economic and administrative links between Gelibolu Castle and Malkara District based on cadastral registers and official records of the period. Thus, it reveals how the links between castles and their hinterlands functioned within the Ottoman provincial structure and how these structures supported each other, using Gelibolu Castle as an example.
