The surgical approach to peripheral nerve repair

Abstract

In this study we aimed to obtain a clinical protocol in choosing the right surgical approach to peripheral nerve repair with respect to our experience in 110 cases treated between 1987-1993. 26 cases had early primary intervention whereas 42 cases had delayed primary repair and 10 cases had secondary treatment. The suture tecnigues used were as follows, 44 epineural, 11 epiperineural, 23 fascicular, 27 nerve graft and 10 tendon transfer tecniques. 5 cases had second operations. Functional evaluations of the patients included EMG studies, jamar dynamometer and pinchmeter measurements, muscle and Semmes Weinstein monofilament sensory evaluations. The results showed that distal, clean cut injuries which were treated with early primary intervention and fascicular repair had a better chance of motor and sensory recovery provided they had intensive rehabilitation program.
