The effects of x-rays used as diagnostic purpose on fracture callus (experimental study)

Abstract

In this study, carried out by the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine, Ataturk University and by the contributions of Pathology Department, 3 separate groups (A, B, C) each consisting of 10 rabbits were used as experiment. Type I open fracture was occured in one fibula of the rabbits iatrogenically, then x-ray was applied to fracture region in fractional and equal doses and equal distance. The fracture region was investigated histopathologically by light microscopy to evaluate callus obtained 30 days after initial process. The results were evaluated in 3 successive degree qualitatively as to osteoclastic activity, vascularization, osteoid occurrence and the amounts of chondroid structure in callus. Group A (control group) and Group B (one exposed 20 times of x-ray) were found normal while fracture healing was found normal in Group A (control group) and B (one exposed 20 times of x-ray), fracture healing was found medium degree underdeveloped in Group C (one exposed 40 times of x-ray). In view of the results obtained, we arrived at the conclusion that the reduction of radiograms to the least point as well as possible taken during the observation of fracture should be better as to fracture union.
