Kinematic condylar AGC total knee arthroplasty: midterm (mean 6 years) follow-up results

Abstract

Objectives:To present the mid-term follow-up results of patients who were treated with kinematic condylar total AGC knee prosthesis for gonarthrosis. Methods: Between 1991 and 1994 fifty knees of forty six patients (mean age 64 years) with gonarthrosis were treated with total knee arthroplasty. In all cases, AGC total knee prosthesis, which preserves posterior cruciate ligament, was implanted. Cemented fixation was applied to all three components. Patellar component was not used in nine patients. Patients were evaluated according to the Knee Society Rating System pre- and postoperatively. Radiologically, position of femoral and tibial components was calculated in anteroposterior and lateral planes. Mean follow-up was 76 months. Results: The mean postoperative knee and functional scores increased to 81 and 72.7 from preoperative scores of 36 and 34.9, respectively. Of nine patients in whom patellar component was not used, three patients required implantation of the patellar component after a mean of 42 months. Of the 50 knees, excellent, good, and poor results were obtained in 32, 11, and 7 knees, respectively. Radiologically, mean alpha and beta angles on anteroposterior planes were measured as 97.8° and 88.5°, and mean gamma and delta angles on lateral planes were 5.8° and 89.1°, respectively. Revision arthroplasty were performed in six patients due to septic (n=2) and aseptic (n=4) loosening. Conclusion:Total knee arthroplasty seems to be a proper treatment method in patients with gonarthrosis when no other treatment alternatives are likely to be successful.
