Abstract

In this experimental study, high performance polyphthalamide (PPA) and PPA mixture with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) [5% by mass] additive are used. Pure PPA polymer and PPA/PTFE mixture were experimented on AISI 440C stainless steel surface in order to examine wear and friction behaviours. PPA/PTFE polymer mixture was prepared by twin screw extruder. At the same time, the effect of load on the wear and friction behaviour of the polymers is investigated. Wear experiments were done by pim-disc wear machine in dry slip medium conditions. 20N, 30N, and 40N load values and 0.5 m/s slip speed were selected to conduct the tribological experiments. Results of the experiments show that friction coefficient and specific wear rate of pure PPA and PPA/PTFE increase with increasing load. Specific wearing rate of pure PPA is 1.2x10-13 m2/N while specific wearing rate of PPA/PTFE mixture is found as 4x10-14 m2/N. Wearing surfaces of pure PPA and PPA/PTFE mixture against stainless steel are analyzed via optical microscope.
