Floods are usually influenced by the interaction of catchment-specific characteristics, such as meteorology, topography, geology and lately climate change. Flood risk assessment issue have traditionally been the domain of hydrologists, water resources engineers and statisticians. Researchers have scientifically proven a sharp global increase in the economic risk associated with floods though flood-related fatalities might be decreasing. The Elmali spillway, immediately upstream of Göksu river in İstanbul, is essential for reducing flood risk. However, Authorities release a huge amount of water at a dam during heavy rainfall, causing floods in many parts of the Göksu river district. In this study, vulnerability risk assessment of Göksu river basin is considered. To this aim, various scenarios are developed based on spilled discharges with various return periods. Later, the impact of spilled discharges on floodplains are mapped. Risk zones are predicted.
