Internet Addiction

Abstract

The author completed his undergraduate education in Marmara University Psychological Counseling and Guidance Department. He received further degrees in education at RMIT University and clinical psychology at Okan University. He regularly writes at Dünya Newspaper published in Australia. In the first part of his book on Internet Addiction, Dinç provides definitions for physical and behavioral addictions in general and continues with a more detailed focus on internet addiction. He refers to Young -the first person to introduce the concept of internet addiction- and shares a research on internet addiction conducted with university students in 2009. He identifies the reasons for internet addiction as lack of time limit on the internet, ability to hide identity, ability to share thoughts without fear of exclusion and ability to communicate with people from all over the world with very low cost. In the second part of the book the author focuses on prevention and treatment of internet addiction. He states that the first step in preventing internet addiction is to accept that the internet is in every moment of our lives and to learn how to use it correctly. He refers to the cognitive behavioral therapy as the mostly used approach for treatment. In this section, the author includes his own opinions and recommendations in addition to the current practices. The book concludes with an internet addiction test, spouse internet addiction test and parent-child internet addiction tests. The author has a clear and comprehensible style.The expression is strengthened with tables and pictures throughout the book.
