Author Guidelines

AUTHOR GUIDELINES (INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS)

Please read the rules below carefully before submitting your manuscript to the ARU Art History Studies Journal.

A. Requirements for Using the Article Template

1. Word limit and file format
Manuscripts must not exceed 10,000 words, excluding the reference list and abstracts. Unless there is a clear and justified reason, this limit applies to all submissions to the ARÜ Art History Studies Journal. The manuscript must be prepared in MS Word. The file name must consist only of the article title.

2. Main title (primary language)
The main title must be formatted as follows: 14 pt, bold, Times New Roman, ALL CAPS, centered, single-spaced, with paragraph spacing 6 pt before and 6 pt after. One blank line must be left before the next heading. The main title should not exceed 15 words.

3. Title in the second language
The title in the second language must be formatted as follows: 12 pt, italic, Times New Roman, with only the initial letters capitalized (title case as applied in the template), centered, single-spaced, with paragraph spacing 6 pt before and 6 pt after.

4. Anonymity for double-blind review
In accordance with double-blind peer review, the main manuscript file must not include the author’s academic title, name, surname, or any other identifying information. For this reason, the **cover page file** and the **main manuscript file** must be submitted as separate documents.

5. **Abstracts and keywords**
Abstracts must be **150–200 words**, prepared in **10 pt Times New Roman**, single-spaced, in a **single paragraph**, **justified**, with paragraph spacing **0 pt before and 0 pt after**. The abstract must not include references, a bibliography, figures, tables, etc.

* The **first abstract** must be written in the **language of publication**.
* If the publication language is **not Turkish**, the **second abstract must be in Turkish**.
Keywords must be written immediately below the abstract **without a blank line**. The number of keywords must be **at least 5 and at most 7**.

6. **Main text formatting and quotations**
There must be **two blank lines** between the abstract section(s) and the main text. The main text must be written in **12 pt Times New Roman**, single-spaced, **justified**. Paragraphs must begin with a **1 cm first-line indent**.

* Direct quotations **under 40 words** must appear within the text in **quotation marks**.
* Direct quotations **40 words or longer** must be written in **10 pt**, indented **1.5 cm from both the left and right**, **without quotation marks**.
Quotations must **not** be italicized. Paragraph spacing must be **6 pt before and 6 pt after**.

7. **Page layout**
The margins in the template must not be changed. Margins are **3 cm** on all sides (top, bottom, left, right).

8. **Headings and subheadings**
The article must be organized into an introduction and subheadings. For each heading, paragraph spacing must be **6 pt before and 6 pt after**. Headings must be written in **12 pt Times New Roman**, **bold**. In all headings, **only the first letters of words should be capitalized**, and headings must be **left-aligned**, aligned with the first-line indentation.

### B. In-Text Citation Style

Citations must be provided **within the text**. When citing sources in the text, the **APA 7** format below must be used.

* **Single author:** (Surname, Year, p. Page)
*Example:* … the façade was articulated (Aslanapa, 1989, pp. 42–44).

* **Two authors:** (Surname & Surname, Year, p. Page)
*Example:* … produced a plastic effect (Kadiroğlu & İşler, 2010, p. 15).

* **Three or more authors:** (Surname et al., Year, p. Page)
*Example:* … produced a plastic effect (Renda et al., 1992, p. 78).

* **No author:** (“Title of work,” Year, p. Page). The title may be shortened in subsequent citations.
*Example 1:* … was clad in white marble (“Amasya’da Türk Devri Hamamları,” 2010, p. 15).
*Example 2:* … was clad in white marble (“Amasya’da Türk,” 2010, p. 15).

* **Multiple works by the same author in the same year:** must be distinguished using letters (e.g., 2020a, 2020b).

* **Online sources in-text:** cite the website name (full or abbreviated) and the year of the information used.
*Example:* … states (World Health Organization, 2018).
*Example:* … states (WHO, 2018).
*Example:* … explains (The MET, 2025).

* **Sacred texts:** provide the surah/chapter/book name, sequence numbers, and verse numbers.
*Example:* … is stated (Bible, 2006, Luke 5:12–15).
*Example:* … is found (Qur’an, 2006, Al-Baqarah 2:12–15).
*Example:* … is explained (Torah, 2006, Genesis 1:5–32).

**Footnotes:** Footnotes should be used for additional information only, and source citation within footnotes must continue to follow the in-text citation method. Footnotes must be **10 pt Times New Roman**, single-spaced, **justified**, with paragraph spacing **0 pt**.

### C. Tables

* Tables must be created using **Insert Table** in MS Word, following the example provided in the template.
* A maximum of **15 tables** may be used in a manuscript.
* The table number and table title must appear **above** the table. According to APA 7:

* **Table number:** at the top, **12 pt**, **bold**, with only the first letter capitalized.
* **Table title:** *italic*, with only the first letter capitalized.
* Leave **one blank line** between the table title and the table body.
* Paragraph spacing for the table number/title block must be **6 pt before and 6 pt after**.
* Leave **one blank line** between the table and the following paragraph.
* Columns/rows may be added as needed, provided the table fits the page layout.
* Tables must be numbered consecutively.
* Do not use punctuation marks (period, comma, etc.) before or after the table number.
* Do not add punctuation at the end of the table title.
* If a table is taken from another source, this must be indicated immediately below the table in **10 pt** with the label **“Source:”**. Longer explanatory notes should be given in a footnote.
*Example:* Source: Canöz, 2025, p. 65.

### D. Images and Figures

* A maximum of **30 images/figures** may be used in a manuscript.
* Drawings and plans must be labeled under the heading **“Figure”**.
* Submitted images must have a minimum resolution of **300 dpi**.
* The figure/image number and title must appear **above** the image. According to APA 7:

* **Figure/Image number:** at the top, **12 pt**, **bold**, with only the first letter capitalized.
* **Figure/Image title:** *italic*, with only the first letter capitalized.
* Leave **one blank line** between the title and the image.
* Paragraph spacing for the number/title block must be **6 pt before and 6 pt after**.
* The number and title must be **centered on the page together with the image**. Please follow the examples in the template for correct placement.
* Images/figures must not be resized in a way that distorts the aspect ratio.
* Figures/images must be numbered consecutively.
* If a figure/image requires a long explanatory note, it should be provided in a footnote.
* If an image is taken from an institutional archive, the abbreviated archive name and archive numbers together with the year of acquisition must be provided under the image using the label **“Source:”**, and permission information must be clearly stated in a footnote.
*Example:* Source: İ.Ü. Rare Books 779, 2025.
* Even if images belong to the author, the source must be indicated. Author-owned images must be cited in **10 pt** under the image as person/collection and year.
*Example:* Source: Canöz Archive, 2025. / Personal Archive, 2025.
* If an image is obtained from an online source, it must be clearly indicated under the image in **10 pt** with the label **“Source:”** together with the access date.

## 5. REFERENCES

When citing sources, authors should consult both foundational works and the most recent, up-to-date publications. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of all references. Both in-text citations and the reference list must be prepared according to **APA 7**, using the journal’s revised/adapted version as required.

If archival documents are used, they must be listed under a separate heading titled **“Archival Sources”**; if web pages are used, they must be listed under **“Internet Sources”**. References must be listed alphabetically. The order should be: **Archival Sources**, then **Published Works**, and finally **Internet Sources**, as shown below.

### Main Sources (Published Works)

Main sources must begin at the left margin starting with the author’s surname. A **1.5 cm hanging indent** must be used from the second line onward. Titles of works must be formatted according to APA 7: *italicized*, with **capital letters only for proper nouns**, and all other words in lower case. **City/place of publication must not be included.**
