Examining the Nationality Element in the Professional Success of Football Coaches

Abstract

In football, it is an essential issue to investigate the impact of the nations to which coaches belong on the success of a team. In one way, a local coach's knowledge of national identity, sports culture and player profiles can influence the success of the team. In this view, local coaches can better communicate with players, understand team dynamics, and create a sense of national identity and loyalty. This research was conducted to investigate the importance of the coach's nation on success in football. The method of the research was determined as "Basic Qualitative Research" and the data collection technique in the research was determined as "Document Analysis". The Miles-Huberman model, a descriptive analysis form, was used to analyze the data in the study. The population of the research consists of well-established teams that have achieved significant success in the history of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA European Football Championship. The sample consists of coaches of established football teams that are champions. Although the success of the coach seems to be related to his talents, experience, leadership skills and team management skills, not to his nation, it has been observed that successful coaches in European cups are not independent of national identity. As a result, a significant number of coaches have achieved significant success in the countries to which they are affiliated with citizenship. Therefore, nationality is an important factor in the success of a coach. This study may help sports managers develop strategies by considering the impact of nationality on coach success. Besides this, each coach has individual abilities and experiences, so the element of nationality should be taken into account, but only as one factor.

Futbolda Teknik Direktör Mesleki Başarısında Milliyet Unsurunun İncelenmesi

Abstract

Futbol’da teknik direktörlerin ait oldukları ulusların, bir takımın başarısı üzerindeki etkisi araştırılması elzem bir konudur. Bir yönden yerel bir antrenörün ulusal kimlik, spor kültürü ve oyuncu profilleri konusundaki bilgisi, takımın başarısını etkileyebilir. Bu görüşe göre, yerel antrenörler, oyuncularla daha iyi iletişim kurabilir, takım dinamiklerini anlayabilir ve ulusal bir kimlik ve bağlılık duygusu oluşturabilirler. Bu araştırma futbolda antrenörün ulusunun başarı üzerindeki önemini araştırmak için yapılmıştır. Araştırmanın yöntemi “Temel Nitel Araştırma”, araştırmada veri toplama tekniği “Doküman Analizi” olarak belirlenmiştir. Araştırmada verilerin analizinde betimsel bir analiz formu olan Miles-Huberman modeli kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini UEFA Şampiyonlar Ligi ve UEFA Avrupa Futbol Şampiyonası tarihinde önemli başarılar elde etmiş köklü takımlar oluşturmaktadır. Örneklemini ise şampiyon olan köklü futbol takımlarının teknik direktörleri oluşturmaktadır. Antrenörün başarısı, ulusuyla değil, sahip olduğu yetenekler, deneyim, liderlik becerileri ve takım yönetimi becerileriyle ilişkili gibi görünse de, Avrupa kupalarında başarılı teknik direktörlerin, ulusal kimlikten bağımsız olmadığı görülmüştür. Sonuç olarak teknik direktörlerin önemli bir kısmı vatandaşlık bağı ile bağlı oldukları ülkelerde önemli başarılar kazanmıştır. Dolayısıyla antrenör başarısında milliyet önemli bir etkendir. Bu çalışma, spor yöneticilerinin milliyet unsurunun antrenör başarısına etkisini gözeterek strateji geliştirmelerine yardımcı olabilir. Bunun yanı sıra, her antrenör bireysel yeteneklere ve deneyimlere sahiptir, bu nedenle milliyet unsuru dikkate alınalıdır, ancak sadece bir faktör olarak değerlendirilmelidir.
