Examination of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation of Women Football Players in Turkey and Portugal Sample

Abstract

The aim of our study is to examine the intrinsic and extrinsic motivational attitudes of female footballers in terms of some variables. The quantitative research method was applied in the research. The population of the study, in Turkey's Mediterranean and Portugal's Porto regions, playing in the 2019-2020 season amateur, semi-professional and professional women constitute footballers. The sample of the study was determined by random sampling method and 205 female football players participated in the study. In the study, the personal information form (in Turkish, Portuguese and English) created by the researcher was used. In addition, in English, the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS), which was developed by Pelletier et al. (1995), the ‘’Sporda Güdülenme Ölçeği’’ (SGÖ) validated and reliabilited by the Kazak (2004) for Turkish athletes, and the Escala de Motivação Desportiva (EME-BR) adapted by Bara Filho et al. (2011) for Portuguese athletes were used in three different languages. The data obtained were analyzed with SPSS 22 package program. Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis H test and Spearman Correlation analysis were used. When examined by the Sport Motivation Scale sub-dimension league variable, motivation of female athletes who play football in Portugal were found to be significantly higher than female athletes in Turkey (p <0.05). In the intrinsic motivation to experience stimulus sub-dimension, it is seen that the motivation levels of professional football players were significantly higher than amateur football players (p <0.05). In the external regulation sub-dimension, it is seen that the motivation levels of those who play football semi-professionally are significantly higher than those who play football professionally (p <0.05).
