Child Protection Practices in Sport in the United States

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine child protection practices in sport within the United States of America (USA) sport system through the relevant policies, regulations and practices of sport management organizations in the USA. The study utilized a thematic review design and a literature-based Detailed Literature Review method was used. The research data were obtained by examining online and printed journals, books, web pages and primary sources on the subject of sports organizations working nationally in the USA. According to the findings of the study, it is seen that the U.S. National Olympic Committee (USOC) has established a child protection system in sports called U.S. Center For Safesport, which covers everyone involved in sports organizations in which children participate, especially coaches, volunteers, contracted personnel and board members. The USOC has extended the protection afforded to athletes under the Safesport policy to the entire sporting community by establishing the USOC Minimum Standards for Athlete Safety Programs Policy. As part of the athlete protection policy, organizations are required to ensure that all coaches who have regular contact with athletes under the age of 18 undergo both a criminal background check and are certified through Safesport. The United States Olympic and Paralympic Games Committee (USOPC) and National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and Local Affiliated Organizations (LAOs) must comply with these policies and procedures.

Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nde Sporda Çocuk Koruma Uygulamaları

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı; Amerika Birleşik Devletleri (ABD) spor sistemi içerisinde bulunan sporda çocuk koruma uygulamalarının, ABD’de görevli spor yönetimi örgütlerinin ilgili politika, yönetmelik ve uygulamaları üzerinden incelenmesidir. Tematik derleme deseninin kullanıldığı çalışmada literatüre dayalı Detaylı Kaynak Taraması metodu kullanılmıştır. Araştırma verilerine ABD’de ulusal çapta görev yapan spor örgütlerinin online ve basılı dergileri, kitapları, web sayfaları ve konuya ilişkin birincil kaynaklar incelenerek ulaşılmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen bulgulara göre; ABD Ulusal Olimpiyat Komitesi’nin (USOC) , başta antrenörler, gönüllüler, sözleşmeli personeller ve yönetim kurulu üyeleri olmak üzere, çocukların katılım sağladığı spor organizasyonlarını yer alan herkesi kapsayan U.S. Center For Safesport isimli sporda çocuk koruma sistemi oluşturduğu görülmektedir. USOC, Safesport politikası kapsamında sporculara sağlanan korumayı, USOC Sporcu Güvenliği Programları için Asgari Standartlar Politikasını da oluşturarak tüm spor çevrelerine genişletmiştir. Sporcu koruma politikasının bir parçası olarak, kuruluşların, 18 yaş altı sporcularla düzenli temas halinde olan tüm antrenörlerin hem sabıka geçmişi kontrolünden geçmelerini hem de Safesport aracılığı ile sertifikalandırılmış olmalarını zorunlu kılmıştır. Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Olimpiyat ve Paralimpik Oyunları Komitesi (USOPC) ve Ulusal Yönetim Organları (NGB) ve Yerel Bağlı Kuruluşlar (LAO'lar) bu politika ve prosedürlere uymak zorundadır.
