Women’s Rights and Feminist Movements in Turkey from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic: A Historical and Social Analysis
Abstract
ABSTRACT:
This study aims to examine the evolution of women's rights and the development of feminist movements in Turkey from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, within its historical and social context. The primary focus of the study is to examine the periodic changes in women's achievements in political, social, and legal spheres, and the impact of feminist movements on social transformations. The study covers legislative changes, social perceptions, and organizational forms related to women's rights from the late Ottoman period to the early years of the Republic. The study employed a qualitative research method, and through a literature review and historical document analysis, the structure, strategies, and outcomes of the women's rights movements of the period were evaluated. The fundamental problem of the study is the inadequate understanding of the interaction between the achievements of women's rights and feminist movements, and social resistance and obstacles throughout history. The findings demonstrate that women’s rights were systematically gained during the transition from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, and that feminist movements played a critical role in shaping this process. Furthermore, it demonstrates that the struggle for gender equality was not limited to legal regulations but was also supported by social perception and cultural transformations. The study contributes to the literature on the history of women’s rights and the development of feminist movements in Turkey, providing a historical perspective on gender equality studies.
