A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY ON THE ADVENTURE OF THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY IN THE SOURCE LITERARY SYSTEM

Abstract

The aim of this study is to provide a descriptive analysis of the adventure of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray in the English source system within the context of translation studies. The work was presented to the source system as three different texts in 1890, 1891, and 2011, respectively. It can be stated that the differences between these texts came to exist as a result of the acts of censorship/self-censorship resorted to under the conditions of the source system. The theme of the work Wilde sent to Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine in 1890 to be published was found inappropriate with respect to the Victorian sense of morality, and The Picture of Dorian Gray was first published in the source system the same year after being censored by the journal’s editors. However, this censorship did not prevent the work from sparking negative reactions immediately upon its publication. Consequently, The Picture of Dorian Gray as necessarily rewritten by Wilde through self-censorship was published in the book form by Ward, Lock & Co. in 1891. An edition based on the text Wilde sent to Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine in 1890 was published for the first time in 2011 by Harvard University Press (HUP) under the title The Picture of Dorian Gray: An Annotated, Uncensored Edition. The fact that the 1891 book text was produced through the 1890 journal text brings up the question of whether we can speak of a case of intralingual indirect translation in the context of The Picture of Dorian Gray. An answer in the affirmative could pave the way for further reflections on indirect translation. As a matter of fact, it can be said that attitudes towards indirect translation are negative in general. However, just the contrary seems to be observed from the discussions that arose about the position of the HUP text against the 1891 book text which is regarded as “standard”. This being the case, after first analyzing the process of censorship/self-censorship in the source system, the present study will explore the key discussions surrounding the work. Based on the foci of these discussions, through conceptual reflections, the study will then attempt to offer an insight into the facts of translation on which The Picture of Dorian Gray’s adventure in the source system could shed light with regard to the phenomenon of indirect translation.

THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY’İN KAYNAK EDEBİYAT DİZGESİNDEKİ SERÜVENİ ÜZERİNE BETİMLEYİCİ BİR ÇALIŞMA

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı, Oscar Wilde’ın The Picture of Dorian Gray (Dorian Gray’in Portresi) adlı eserinin İngiliz kaynak dizgesindeki serüveni üzerine çeviribilim bağlamında betimleyici bir inceleme yapmaktır. Eser kaynak dizgeye sırasıyla 1890, 1891 ve 2011 yıllarında üç farklı metin halinde sunulmuştur. Bu üç metin arasındaki farklılıkların, kaynak dizge koşulları çerçevesinde başvurulan sansür/öz-sansür işlemleri neticesinde ortaya çıkmış olduğu belirtilebilir. Wilde’ın yayımlanmak üzere 1890’da Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine’e gönderdiği eserin içeriği Victoria Çağı ahlak anlayışına göre uygunsuz bulunmuş ve The Picture of Dorian Gray kaynak dizgede ilk olarak aynı yıl dergi editörleri tarafından sansürlenerek yayımlanmıştır. Ancak bu sansür, eser yayımlanır yayımlanmaz olumsuz tepkiler uyandırmasının önüne geçmemiştir. Bunun üzerine Wilde’ın öz-sansür uygulayarak yeniden kaleme almak durumunda kaldığı The Picture of Dorian Gray 1891’de Ward, Lock & Co. tarafından kitap olarak basılmıştır. Wilde’ın 1890’da Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine’e gönderdiği metne dayanan bir baskı ise ilk kez 2011’de Harvard University Press (HUP) tarafından The Picture of Dorian Gray: An Annotated, Uncensored Edition başlığıyla yayımlanmıştır. 1891 kitap metninin 1890 dergi metni üzerinden üretilmiş olması The Picture of Dorian Gray örneğinde bir diliçi dolaylı çeviriden bahsedilip bahsedilemeyeceği sorusunu gündeme getirmektedir. Bu soruya verilebilecek olumlu bir cevap ise dolaylı çeviri kapsamında başka bir sorgulamanın yolunu açabilmektedir. Nitekim dolaylı çeviriye bakış açısının genel anlamda olumsuz olduğunu söylemek mümkündür. Ancak HUP metninin “standart” kabul edilen 1891 kitap metnine karşı konumu üzerine ortaya çıkan tartışmalarda bunun aksinin geçerli olduğu gözlemlenebilmektedir. Tüm bunlardan hareketle çalışmada öncelikle kaynak dizgedeki sansür/öz-sansür süreci incelendikten sonra eserle ilgili başlıca tartışmalar ele alınacaktır. Ardından ise bu tartışmaların vurgu noktaları odağında kavramsal sorgulamalarla The Picture of Dorian Gray’in kaynak dizgedeki serüveninin dolaylı çeviri olgusu açısından ışık tutabileceği çeviri gerçeklerine ilişkin bir bakış açısı sunulmaya çalışılacaktır.
