Clinical and Laboratory Assessment of Serotype Distribution and Antimicrobial Resistance in Salmonella Isolates from the Aksaray Region: A One-Year Experience
Abstract
Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the serotype distribution, clinical characteristics, and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Salmonella isolates recovered from clinical specimens submitted to the Microbiology Laboratory of Aksaray Training and Research Hospital throughout 2025Material and Method: A total of six Salmonella isolates were analyzed. Serotyping was performed by the National Reference Laboratory. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was interpreted according to EUCAST 2025 criteria. Demographic and clinical data were retrospectively reviewed Results: Four distinct serotypes were identified: S. Typhi (n=2), S. Enteritidis (n=2), S. Typhimurium (n=1), and S. Hadar (n=1). The two S. Typhi isolates were recovered from blood cultures of patients living in the same household and detected two months apart, suggesting potential household transmission. Both isolates exhibited resistance to ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, and ceftriaxone. Among non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) isolates, ampicillin resistance was 66%, while all isolates remained susceptible to trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole. Ciprofloxacin resistance among NTS isolates was 50%. Clinically, NTS infections presented with mild-to-moderate gastrointestinal symptoms, whereas S. Typhi infections were associated with systemic involvement and prolonged hospitalization. Conclusion: This study indicates ongoing Salmonella serotype diversity in Aksaray region and highlights notable antimicrobial resistance, particularly the detection of two multidrug-resistant S. Typhi isolates from the same household. The increasing fluoroquinolone resistance in NTS isolates and the unusual ceftriaxone resistance in S. Typhi underscore the need for strengthened regional surveillance and updated empirical treatment strategies.
