Artificial Intelligence in Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery in Türkiye Current Footprint, Global Benchmarking, and Priority Actions for Scalable Clinical Impact

Abstract

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming cardiovascular medicine, with global leaders like the USA, China, and UK setting benchmarks in research and implementation. Recent position papers by the EACVI/EANM and the American Heart Association emphasize the importance of methodological rigor, clinical validation, and equitable adoption before large-scale integration. Türkiye’s contribution is increasing, with high-impact reviews on AI-based clinical decision support, coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, and interventional cardiology gaining international citations. These successes highlight Türkiye’s potential for global visibility when aligned with priority topics and robust methodology. The national journal ecosystem offers complementary dissemination pathways. Systemic enablers, such as the Ministry of Health’s Artificial Intelligence Projects Implementation Unit and initiatives linking real-time AI monitoring in ICUs to the e-Nabız platform, are emerging. Priority actions include transitioning from retrospective, single-center studies to multi-center prospective validation, establishing a national AI–CVD data consortium using federated infrastructures and standardized models, implementing clinical MLOps frameworks with auditable governance, aligning publication strategies with clinical relevance, and integrating research efforts with national initiatives through pragmatic trial designs. With a growing scholarly base, supportive journals, and nascent infrastructure, Türkiye is well positioned to emerge as a regional leader in cardiovascular AI, provided that methodological rigor and real-world validation remain central to future work.
