The Origin of Silk and A Brief History of Journey of Silk on the Silk Road

Abstract

The beginning of the Silk Road is considered to be the long journey taken by the envoy named Chang-Chien (200-114BC) sent by the Han Dynasty emperor Wu-ti (156-87BC) to visit the Indo-Europan people of Yue-chi. Chang, having spent 12 years overseas, returned along with a very important report on the rich cities of Part, Baktria, and Fergana he encountered along the Tarim Basin and Tian-shan. Before too long, Chinese merchants began to launch voyages to Central Asia. Over time, this giant route that departed from the city of Changan and went along such cities as Khotan, Ladakh, Siraf, Rome, traversing between Asia, Middle East and Europe, hosted peoples and enabled the exchange of goods and ideas, creating a multicultural environment. Along this ancient route, silk was the primary good for trade and, despite attempts by China to keep it as a secret, silk-making expanded to, first, Khotan, and then to India, Iran and Rome.

İPEĞİN DOĞUŞU VE İPEK YOLU'NDA İPEĞİN YOLCULUĞUNUN KISA TARİHÇESİ

Abstract

İpek Yolu’nun başlangıcı, Han Hanedanlığı (M.Ö. 206 - M.S. 220) İmparatoru Wu-ti’nin (M.Ö. 156 - M.Ö. 87), Hint-Avrupa halkından Yüeçilere gönderdiği bir Çinli elçi olan Chang-Chien’in (M.Ö. 200 - M.Ö. 114) M.Ö. 138 yılında çıktığı yolculuk olarak kabul edilmektedir. Chang, on iki yıllık bir maceranın ardından M.Ö. 126’da, Tarım Basin ve Tanrı Dağları boyunca karşılaştığı zengin Part, Baktria ve Fergana hakkında hazırladığı çok değerli bir rapor ile geri dönmüştür. Çok geçmeden, Çinli tüccarlar Orta Asya’ya sefer düzenlemeye başlamışlardır. Çin’in Changan eyaletinden başlayan, Hotan, Ladakh, Siraf, Roma başta olmak üzere, Asya, Ortadoğu ve Avrupa arasında insanların ve fikirlerin alışverişini sağlayan ve uğradığı kentler ve limanlarda çok kültürlü bir ortam yaratan bu devasa güzergâh oldukça geniş bir ürün yelpazesine ev sahipliği yapmıştır. İpek, bu kadim rotada ticareti yapılan başlıca ürünlerden biridir ve Çin’in bir sır gibi saklama çabalarına rağmen ipekböcekçiliği önce Hotan’a, ardından Hindistan, İran ve Roma’ya yayılmıştır.
