Abstract

In this research, the traditionally built houses in the city of Erzurum were examined from the point of Cultural Geography. To determine the effect of the culture on houses objectively, all of the houses in various parts of the city were studied. One of the material, cultural assest that best reflect the cultural characteristics of the people from the past is the houses they built. Therefore, the main point of this study is the traditional houses and the effect of the culture on the construction of these houses. When we consider the subject in this context, the traditional houses in the city of Erzurum are seen to reflect the cultures of the families house in the city best. It was noticed that while these house were being built, cold climate conditions as well as Turkish-Islamic culture had been effective. Although the number of them decline day by day, the houses that their past dates back to 350 years ago form the best examples of the traditional culture. The traditional houses by which both the impact of Turkish culture and Islam religion an the conditions of physical Geography can clearly be identified have been evaluated with different aspects from the perspective of Cultural Geography.
