Investigation of Earthenware Production with Traditional Methods in Mamak (Çanaklı) Town (Ağlasun-Burdur) in the Framework of Rural Tourism

Abstract

This study has been undertaken with the concept that traditionally maintained ceramic production in the town of Mamak (Çanaklı) of the Ağlasun District in Burdur Province can be a crucial symbol for rural tourism in the creation of alternative tourism options for Ağlasun tourism initiatives which have developed in the framework of the ancient city of Sagalassos.

Studies have shown that ceramic production (pottery) in Mamak (Çanaklı) has been employed since the establishment of the village (which is now a town) and its golden ages were the 19th and 20th centuries. Pottery production, a common activity undertaken by the villagers until the '70s, was gradually abandoned after this date. Today, ceramic production (pottery making) which is still done with traditional methods by only two individuals in the area is losing its significance day by day. However, this production activity which is one of the remnants of the rural material culture is an important symbol and alternative that can be integrated with the ancient city of Sagalassos. One the examples of best practice of applying this sort of traditional production to tourism can be seen in the many pottery ateliers that are also the main source of income in Avanos region.

The study which examines Mamak (Çanaklı) pottery production in detail employs "case study" method of the qualitative research methods. The reason why the particular method was selected is related to the desire to examine the research topic in its immediate area and to obtain detailed information in addition to the fact that the research center has unique characteristics and the selected method can serve the integration of touristic activities with local cultures and help support the local economy. Data collection tool(s) in the study are the review of written documents related to the topic, observations and face to face interviews. Use of more than one data collection tool in these types of research not only provides the researcher with more reliable and comprehensive findings but also increases the validity of the study.
