Abstract

Aim: One of the goals of endodontic treatment is to prepare the root canals mechanically. Recent studies showed that all preparation techniques that we use commonly just prepare only 40-60% of the root canal system. Also that ratio is much for oval canals. The aim of this in vitro study was to measure root and root canal diameters, root and root canal diameter ratios at different levels in mandibular premolars. Material and Method: Five hundred mandibular premolar teeth were used for this study. Teeth were randomly divided into groups of threes and with the help of standard device each group's mesio-distal and bucco-lingual radiographs were taken. Then radiographs were analysed with CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6 software. Data were statistically evaluated. Result: In 201 (20.1%) of the 1000 cross sections investigated, a long oval canal (the long canal diameter was at least 2 times the short canal diameter) was identified. Other 746 (74.6%) cross sections were oval and round. Only 53 (5.3%) examined samples were irregular. Results revealed that root canals of mandibular premolars were generally oval and round. Conclusion: According to the findings, it seems that preparation and disinfection of the root canals of mandibular premolars are difficult because of the complex anatomy and morphology of their root canal systems
