BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE OF VITAMIN D AND RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DENTISTRY

Abstract

Vitamin D has an important effect on calcium and phosphorus homeostasis and it is indispensible for bone formation. Moreover vitamin D regulates alot of genes involved in cell differentiation and cell proliferation through nuclear vitamin D receptor of its active form, 1,25-dihydroksyvitamin D3. Besides its important effects, vitamin D contributes to the prevention of various cancers such as colon cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer, autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and diabetes, allergic diseases, cardiovascular and infectious diseases. In many studies, vitamin D insufficiency that is proved to be related with bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis of jaw and periodontal diseases. In this review the metabolism of vitamin D, its function, the effects of vitamin D on systems, and relationship between dentistry is going to be mentioned

Abstract

ÖZET

Vitamin D, kalsiyum ve fosfor hemostazı üzerinde önemli bir etkiye sahiptir ve kemik gelişimi için de vazgeçilmezdir. Ayrıca aktif form olan 1,25-dihidroksivitamin D3’ün nükleer vitamin D reseptörü aracılığı ile hücre diferansiyasyonu ve proliferasyonu ile ilgili birçok geni regüle etmektedir. Vitamin D’nin bu önemli etkilerinin yanında kolon kanseri, prostat kanseri, akciğer kanseri gibi birçok kanser tipinin, multiple skleroz ve diyabet gibi otoimmun hastalıkların, allerjik, kardiyovasküler ve enfeksiyon hastalıkların önlenmesinde de önemli bir yeri vardır. Vitamin D yetersizliğinin çenelerde görülen bifosfonata bağlı osteonekroz ve periodontal hastalıklarla bağlantılı olduğu yapılan çalışmalarla kanıtlanmıştır. Bu derlemede vitamin D’nin metabolizması, fonksiyonu, sistemler üzerine olan etkileri ve diş hekimliği ile olan ilişkisinden bahsedilecektir.
