DİŞ HEKİMLERİNİN SPOR DİŞ HEKİMLİĞİNDE TRAVMA VE KORUYUCU YÖNTEMLER KONUSUNDA BİLGİ DÜZEYLERİNİN DEĞERLENDİRİLMESİ

Year 2018, Volume: 28 Issue: 4, 475 - 481, 14.10.2018

Abstract

Ancak hekimlerin sadece klinikte %13,8’i hastalarına
ağız koruyucusu uygulaması yapmaktadır. Hekimlerin ağız koruyucusu uygulamama
nedenleri; %38,15’i herhangi bir eğitim almadığı için, %5,78’i hastalar
Konu
hakkında eğitim almayan hekimlerin %84,1’i eğitim almak istediklerini

EVALUATION OF KNOWLEDGE OF
DENTISTS ABOUT TRAUMA AND PREVENTIVE METHODS IN SPORTS DENTISTRY

Aim: Sports activities and competitions increases the potential for possible dental trauma. It is known that the effects of trauma can be minimized with the use of mouthguards . The aim of this study is to evaluate the level of knowledge and behavior of dentists on sports dentistry and dental trauma.

Material and Methods: In this study, the descriptive questionnaire including 23 questions was delivered via printed or internet to the dentists working in public or private clinics in Istanbul. 346 respondents who returned the completed data forms were included in the study. For statistical analysis, Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test were used, and Sperman correlation were used for nonparametric tests. P value was set as 0.05.

Results: It was determined that 94.80% of dentists
participating in the study believed that the use of mouthguards during sports
activities was protective against trauma.
However, only 13.8% of dentists
recommended their patients to wear mouthguard. The reasons why doctors do not
apply mouthguards; 38.15% did not have any education, 5.77% was found to be
costly by patients, and 42.77% was stated other causes, because 3.76% did not
think it was belong to dentistry field. 62.43% of the dentists did not have
education on mouthguard application; 29,48% had only theoretical education,
8,09% had both theoretical education and hands-on. 84.1% of dentists who did
not have education on the subject stated that they wanted to have further
education.

Conclusion: As a result, this study shows that using mouthgards during sports activities is considered as an effective protective method by dentists in Istanbul. However, the percentage of dentists who apply mouthgards is not as high as expected.
