MIDWIFERY STUDENTS' PREJUDICE AGAINST OBESE PREGNANT WOMEN

Abstract

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the prejudices of midwifery students against obese pregnant women.

Method:The study was conducted with 173 2nd, 3rd, and 4th- year midwifery students in the Health Sciences Faculty of a university in the Black Sea region. The data were collected by using the "Personal Information Form" and the "GAMS-27 Obesity Prejudice Scale". Number, percentage distribution, mean, ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis test, and independent samples t test were used to assess the data.

Results: When the mean scores of GAMS-27 Obesity Prejudice Scale were compared in terms of the descriptive characteristics of the students in the study, it was found that there was a statistically significant difference between total mean scores of GAMS-27 Obesity Prejudice Scale and the students’ classes. In the study, it was determined that while total mean score of GAMS-27 Prejudice scale was 74.51±8.46, 69.9% of the students had the tendency for prejudice, 10.4% were prejudiced, and 19.7% did not have the prejudice.

Conclusion: In the study, it was found that more than half of the students had the tendency for prejudice and very few ones were prejudiced. It was observed that the students studying in the upper years had also more prejudices.
