Year 2021, Volume: 24 Issue: 4, 503 - 511, 15.12.2021

Abstract

EVALUATION OF LEVELS’ QUALITY OF LIFE AND DEPRESSION AMONG FAMILY CAREGIVERS WITH HAEMATOLOGY PATIENTS

Year 2021, Volume: 24 Issue: 4, 503 - 511, 15.12.2021
https://doi.org/10.17049/ataunihem.646480

Abstract

Aim: This study was conducted analytically and descriptively to evaluate the quality of life and depression status of individuals who care for haematology patients.
Method: Family caregivers (n=102) who cared for the patients treated in the Haematology clinic between July and September 2014 were included in the scope of the study. The data were collected using the caregivers and patient descriptive information form, the caregivers' quality of life scale, and the Beck depression scale. Ethics committee and institutional permission was obtained for the research, and verbal consent was obtained from the participants. Data were analyzed in independent groups using t, Mann Whitney U, Kruskall Wallis, variance, correlation and simple regression tests.
Results: The mean age of the caregivers was 44.6±14.6, the average age of the patients receiving care was 57.8±15.0, the average quality of life was 75.8±19.8, and the mean score of the depression scale was 15.7±7.8. It was found that 83.4% of caregivers have depression. In our study, a negative correlation was found between the caregivers' quality of life scale sub-dimension and depression total score averages; (p<0.05), it was found that depression negatively affected the quality of life (β = -0.322) and predicted 10.4% of the quality of life (p= 0.001).
Conclusion: In this study, the mean scores of the quality of life of the participants were moderate and depression was found in the majority of them. The relationship between quality of life and depression factors is important in individuals who care for haematology patients, and nurses have important functions in this sense.
