SUMMARY
The Effects of Pasture Supplementation With Concentrates and Ammonium Nitrate Added Concentrales on Steer-Calves and Yearlings
Pasture supplemantation during
summer was studied in order to determine
the optimum level of supplementation,
gain trends on summer
pasture and feed utilization of different
breeds of calves and yearling
steers,.
25 head of 3 to 6-month old calves
and 31 heads of 7 to ı 2-month
old yearling steers were randomly assigned
to 3 treatments according to their
breeds, age and body weights·.
Treatment- ı was control group
with no supplementation, second treatment
was pastur~ plus concentrate
(l8 % crude protein) and the third
one was pasture phıs ammonıum nitrate
ad<!ed proteiıı concentrate (26
% crude protein). SuppIementation levels
were 4ÜO gm/day for 3 to 6- month
old calves and. 800 gm/day for 7 to
ıı-month old of age steers for both
protein concentrate and ammonium
nitrate added protein concentrate.
BQth concentrates were fed once a
day, in the evening. Animals were
watered twice a dayand weighed in
every 14 days during experimental period.
There was a significant (P < 0,05)
adva, ntage in weight gain's feeding of
the two additional concentrates in
both calves and steers as compared to
those control gwups. However, ammonium
nitrate added concentrates were
slightly inferior to those concentrates
without ammonium n.itrate.
The breeds Were Brown Swiss,
Brown Swiss x Red Anaıolian erosses
and Red Anatolians. The frist two
used the pasture more efficiently than
those Red Anatolians in 3 to 6-month
old calves. However, in older groups,
7 to l2-month old steers, only Brown
Swiss steers were significanily superior
to botb Bwrown Swiss x Red Anatolian
Crosses and Red Anatolians.
Pasture supplerrientation with 400
and 800 grams of concentrates was
economical and improved the financial
rehıros in calve" and yearlings respectively.
From all thcse data it was conetuded
that pasture should be suppJementcd
with concentmtes espeeiaUy after 15 tlı
of August in Erzurum area. This
is going to increase the net ineome.
