THE EFFECT OF THE DIFFERENT WEANING AGES ON THE GROWTH AND FEED EFFICIENCY CHARACTERISTICS OF HOLSTEIN FRIESIAN CALVES
SUMMARY: In this research, Holstein-Friesian calves reared in the Research Farm of College of Agriculture at Atatürk University were weaned at 30, 45 and 60 days of ages and the amount of milk fed the calves was calculated as %7 of the birth weights of calves. The average weight gains determined between birth and six month of ages for the calves weaned at 30, 45 and 60 days of ages were 0.52±0.01, 0.50±0.01 and 0.53±0.01 kg respectively. The differences among the groups were found to be insignificant. In this research, total milk consumption and total dry matter of the feed consumed for per kg weight gain in the period between birth and six month of age were 61.8±4.81 kg and 4.0±0.09 kg for calves weaned at 30 days of age, 88.0±5.0 kg and 4.0±0.09 for the calves weaned at 45 days of age, 132.0±5.0 kg and 4.0±0.07 for the calves in the 60 days group. The differences among the groups were highly significant (P<0.01) for the milk consumption, but they were insignificant for total dry matter of feed consumed for per kg weight gain.
