Historical and Contemporary Issues of Book Publishing in Southern European Countries

Abstract

This article explores the historical development and contemporary dynamics of book publishing in Southern European countries, with a particular focus on Italy, Spain, and Portugal. The study traces the evolution of book production from the Middle Ages to the digital era and examines the role of publishing in cultural transmission, education, and multimedia integration. In addition, it analyzes regional disparities, gender-specific dimensions, state policies, and international cooperation in the publishing sector. Using analytical and statistical data, the research evaluates market trends, reader preferences, and the competitiveness of publishing houses in the global context. The findings highlight the cultural, economic, and social significance of book publishing and propose strategic recommendations for its sustainable development in the digital age.
