Identities in Transit: Bauman’s Liquid Modernity in Carol Ann Duffy’s Originally

This paper considers Carol Ann Duffy’s 1990 poem Originally through Zygmunt Bauman’s idea of liquid modernity, which portrays today’s world as uncertain and marked by the weakening of fixed identities. The poem’s three stanzas are examined to show how migration affects personal and cultural identity, balancing the wish for stability with the need for change. A close reading method, supported by literary and sociological ideas, is used to show how the speaker represents a world where traditional belonging fades and temporary ties emerge. The use of free verse and strong images such as the “red room” and “tongue shedding its skin” supports the theme of shifting identity. Duffy’s Scottish-Irish background gives the poem a cultural richness and reflects her awareness of being uprooted. The poem is seen as a thoughtful response to the emotional and mental effects of migration. Combining Bauman’s theory with Duffy’s poetic language, this work contributes to literary research by examining how poetry connects with present-day social life.

Geçiş Halindeki Kimlikler: Carol Ann Duffy’nin Originally Adlı Şiirinde Bauman’ın Akışkan Modernitesi

Öz

Bu makale, Carol Ann Duffy’nin 1990 tarihli Originally (Aslen) adlı şiirini Zygmunt Bauman’ın akışkan modernite kavramı çerçevesinde ele almaktadır. Bauman’a göre modern toplum belirsizlikle karakterize olur ve kalıcı kimlik yapılarını zayıflatır. Şiirin üç kıtası, göç sürecinde bireyin kimliğinde yaşanan değişimleri, kökene bağlılık isteğiyle yeni bir çevreye uyum sağlama zorunluluğu arasındaki denge üzerinden değerlendirir. Edebi ve sosyolojik yaklaşımlarla desteklenen yakın okuma yöntemiyle, şiirdeki öznenin geleneksel aidiyet biçimlerinden uzaklaşıp geçici bağlara yönelimi incelenmektedir. Serbest vezin ve “kırmızı oda”, “dilin deri değiştirmesi” gibi çarpıcı imgeler, kimliğin kaygan yapısını yansıtmaktadır. Duffy’nin İskoç-İrlanda kökeni, şiire kültürel bir zemin kazandırmakta ve köklerinden ayrılarak yer değiştirme durumuna karşı hassasiyetini göstermektedir. Şiir, göçün yalnızca fiziksel değil, duygusal ve zihinsel boyutlarına da odaklanarak bireyin değişim karşısındaki konumunu anlamaya katkı sunmaktadır. Bu bağlamda çalışma, kimliğin sabit bir miras değil, sürekli yeniden inşa edilen bir süreç olarak nasıl deneyimlendiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Bauman’ın kuramsal düşüncesi ile Duffy’nin şiirsel anlatımının birleşimi, edebiyat ile toplum arasındaki ilişkiyi sorgulayan araştırmalara katkı sunmakta ve şiirin güncel toplumsal koşulları anlamadaki değerini göstermektedir.
