Abstract

Periorbital Edema Due to Olanzapine Use: A Case Report

Year 2024, , 198 - 201, 24.10.2024

Abstract

Olanzapine, which is used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, substance use disorder, major depressive disorder, and anxiety disorder, may cause edema. In this paper, a case of periorbital edema associated with olanzapine use was discussed. Periorbital edema occurred on the 9th day of treatment in a 26-year-old male patient who was started on olanzapine 10 mg/day with the comorbid diagnoses of bipolar disorder and polysubstance use disorder. The current side effect was associated with olanzapine use and the drug was discontinued. Periorbital edema completely disappeared on the 6th day of olanzapine discontinuation. The patient's treatment related to his psychiatric diagnoses has been completed. No edema was observed during follow-up. As a result, it should not be forgotten that periorbital edema may occur due to olanzapine use.
