In Turkey, with the metropolitan municipality law numbered 6360 (2012), the legal entities of villages and towns in 30 provinces with metropolitan municipalities were abolished and transformed into neighborhood status. According to the 2012 data of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT), the rural population, which constitutes 50% of the population of Hatay province, was registered as the urban population by TURKSTAT after this law. The aim of this study is to determine the urban areas in Hatay and the urban-rural population of the province in accordance with geographical principles. In the study, the urban settlements throughout the province have been determined according to certain criteria and the neighborhoods within the settlement form of the cities have been determined by using field observations and satellite images. Then, the urban populations have been obtained by summing the 2020 populations of the neighborhoods within the urban areas. In the study, it has been revealed that 384 of the 593 neighborhoods in Hatay have the characteristics of rural neighborhoods and 209 of them have the characteristics of urban neighborhoods. In addition, it has been determined that the urban population ratio of the province is 75% (1.240.717) and the rural population ratio is 25% (417.699).
