Abstract

This article aims to investigate the potential influences of Cārvāka and/or Lokāyata thought on the development of Buddha's teachings. Although shaped under the influence of Hinduism, Buddha's teachings were also nourished by various philosophical and religious perspectives. The role of philosophical schools such as the Cārvākas and Lokāyatas, known for their materialist and skeptical tendencies, constitutes the focal point of this study. To fully understand Ancient Indian Philosophy, it is necessary to examine the emergence of Buddhist philosophy within its historical context. This article explores the potential direct or indirect impact of the materialist and skeptical views of the Cārvākas and Lokāyatas on the evolution of Buddhist philosophy. By providing a framework for understanding the diversity and complexity of ancient Indian thought, this study also seeks to comprehend the historicity of human existence as a means to better analyze contemporary issues.
