The Myths of Gaṅgā’s Descent from Heaven to Earth in Sanskrit Literature

Abstract

This article tells the mythological story of the Gangā River.
According to mythology, the river originates its source from the sky, not directly from the Himālayas. To wash the sixty thousand sons of the ancient king Sagara, who were reduced to ashes, with her purifying waters and make them worthy of heaven, Gangā must bring to the earth. The legend was enriched by adding many topics such as a horse sacrifice, the kidnapping of the sacrificial horse, sixty thousand sons harming the earth while searching for the horse, Bhagīratha's suffering, his showing her the way to Gangā and bringing her down to the earth. Gods such as Indra, Vishnu, and Śiva are included in the subject matter. The narration in the Rāmāyana is the most comprehensive one. This is briefly compared with the narrations of the Mahābhārata and Purānas. Gangā is born from the feet of Vishnu, the god of the plains, while Shiva, the god of the mountains, disperses her from his head. The legend is very important in terms of revealing the social subconsciousness of ancient Indian society.

SANSKRİT EDEBİYATINDA GANGĀ’NIN GÖKYÜZÜNDEN YERYÜZÜNE DÖKÜLÜŞ EFSANELERİ

Abstract

Bu makale, Gangā Nehri’nin mitolojik öyküsünü anlatmaktadır. Mitolojiye göre nehir Himālaya Dağları’ndan değil, gökten gelmektedir. Eski zaman krallarından Sagara’nın küle dönen altmış bin oğlunu saflaştırıcı sularıyla yıkamak ve onların cenneti hak etmelerini sağlamak için Gangā’nın yeryüzüne getirilmesi kaçınılmazdır. Konuya bir at kurbanı töreni, bu törende kullanılacak olan atın kaçırılması, atın aranması sırasında altmış bin oğlun yeryüzüne zarar vermeleri, Bhagīratha’nın çile doldurması, Gangā’yı arkasına katıp ona yol göstererek onu gökten yere indirmesi gibi pek çok konu eklenerek efsane zenginleştirilmiştir. İndra, Vishnu ve Şiva gibi tanrılar işin içine katılırlar. Rāmāyana’daki anlatım en kapsamlı olanıdır. Bu, Mahābhārata ve Purāna anlatımlarıyla kısaca mukayese edilmiştir. Gangā, dağların tanrısı Şiva’nın başından, düzlüklerin tanrısı Vishnu’nun ayağından doğmaktadır. Efsane eski Hint toplumunun toplumsal bilinç altını göstermesi bakımından oldukça önemlidir.
