O, Anselm’den iradenin iki temel temayülü olduğu teorisini alır, ki Anselm bunları “faydaya yönelik temayül” (affection for advantage) ve “adalete yönelik temayül” (affection for justice) olarak adlandırmaktadır. Fayda temayülü, eylemi yapan kişinin kendi mutluluğu ve kemaline yönelik dürtüdür. Adalet temayülü, eylemi yapan kişiden bağımsız olarak, kendi içinde iyi olan şeye yönelik dürtüdür.
