“Validity and Authenticity of Imitatively Belief”

Abstract

Some scholars opposed reasoning in matters of faith. Some others say that such reasoning is religiously permissible. Still some others stated that certain people know the articles of faith only by way of reasoning and hence it is obligatory for them to do so. All scholars who are of these views also think that faith by imitation (taqlid) is valid and acceptable. So faith by blind following is sufficient for salvation in the hereafter. Almost all Muslim theologians claim that reasoning in matter of faith is a religious obligation for everyone. According to the Ash‗ariyyah and the Maturidiyyah, although he who has faith through following an authority commits a sin for refraining from reasoning, he is still a believer. On the other hand, certain Mu‗tazili scholars asserted likewise that such a believer is charged with grave sin for refraining from resoning, but they also claimed that this sin obliterates the faith of that believer, places him in an in-between position (al-manzilah). Yet some other Mu‗tazilites argue that imitation or following blindly cannot be a source of knowledge and whoever believes by imitating the beliefs of Muslim society cannot be considered as a fatihful
