Contradiction, Mestcizâde and his 'Hilâfiyyât'. In this paper, firstly, the expression“contradiction”, which has come to mean disagreement, conflict, dispute, misunderstanding,ligitation, hostility or difference of opinion among scholars or men of law, will be handled;secondly, it will be pointed out that the word has also been used to mean “comparative legalstudies”; thirdly, it will be emphasized that the word means, “science of dispute”, a word which hasbeen placed in the literature of books on the issue of controversies. Then, it will be pointed out thatthe subject found its way to the Ottoman schools of theology as a mental discipline studied invarious centuries; and finally, books written on contradiction which deal with the interpretationof Islamic scripture and with the science of the Koran will be named and Hilâfiyyât, which iswritten by Mestcizâde that the great Ottoman thinker and judge of the eighteenth century, will bebriefly dealt with
