bulunabilmektedir.
Having a rich heritage in Islamic history and
civilization, India is a country that has raised many scholars who have been
appreciated not only by Muslims but by non-Muslims thanks to their significant
contributions to their respective fields. One of these scholars is undoubtedly
Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah who was one of the most prominent Muslim scholars of
the 20th century. He was born in 1908 in Hyderabad where he spent
his early years. As a result of the political and cultural developments that
took place around the middle of the century, he had to live most of his life
away from his country. He lived in various European countries as well as in
Turkey and taught and lectured at different universities including Ankara
University. This research note directly stemmed from the two-month visit I paid
to Hyderabad in early 2019, during which I gathered some information and
documents detailing Hamidullah’s life. In this paper I want to share the
Turkish translation of an interview I made with Hamidullah’s nephew Muhammad
Saifullah Saheb in Hyderabad in February 2019. The interview is followed by the
edition and the Turkish translation of one of the original letters of
Hamidullah obtained from Saheb. Both the interview and the letter contain
valuable data on Hamidullah’s personal life style and his scientific
personality.
