Genellikle benliği bir yanılsama olarak gören ve onun zaman içinde aynı kalamayacağını öne süren günümüz felsefi akımına karşı Trenton Merricks, Self and Identity kitabında, benliğin zamansal özdeşliğini savunmaktadır.

The question of whether we remain the same people over time raises the issue of what constitutes selfhood and identity. In his book Self and Identity, Trenton Merricks argues against the current philosophical trend that sees the self as an illusion and cannot remain the same over time.
