FROM ‘MODERN PRINCE’ TO ‘POST-MODERN PRINCE”: ON GRAMSCI’S THEORY OF THE POLITICAL PARTY

Abstract

This study intends to analyze Gramsci’s theory of the political party. Political parties are argued at two different levels by Gramsci. On the one hand, he takes political parties as the legal instruments of the liberal democratic system and as tools of organizing the hegemony of administrative class, on the other hand, he sees political parties as the formative power of the collective will that will transform the society to create a new one. Gramsci has formulated the theory of political parties in this second meaning as the creator of the collective will. In this context, the first part of this study concentrates on Gramsci’s analysis on the operation of modern liberal democracies and the role of political parties in this operation. And the second part is examining Gramsci’s theory on the problems of organization and operation of the political parties in the process of the creation of the transformative collective will. The last part of the study is an inquiry into the problem of transformative collective will. Gramsci formulates the problem of transformative collective will with the metaphor of “modern prince.” This study also looks the relationship between Gramsci’s ‘modern prince’ and the metaphor of ‘postmodern prince’ that is being debated in political theory.

MODERN PRENS’TEN ‘POST-MODERN PRENS’E: GRAMSCI’NİN SİYASAL PARTİ KURAMI ÜZERİNE

Abstract

Bu çalışmada Antonio Gramsci’nin siyasal parti kuramı incelenmektedir. Gramsci’nin kuramında siyasal partiler iki farklı düzeyde ele alınmaktadır. Gramsci, bir yandan siyasal partileri liberal demokrasinin işleyişindeki ve yönetici sınıfın hegemonyasının örgütlenmesindeki konumuyla ele alırken, diğer yandan da yeni bir toplumun kuruluşuna yönelik dönüştürücü toplumsal iradenin oluşturulması sürecinde oynadıkları rollerin kuramını geliştirmişti. Bu doğrultuda, çalışmada, ilk olarak, Gramsci’nin modern liberal demokrasilerin işleyişi ve bu süreçte siyasal partilerin üstlendiği işlevlere ilişkin kuramı incelenmektedir. Çalışmanın ikinci bölümünde de, dönüştürücü toplumsal iradenin oluşturulması sürecinde siyasal partilerin örgüt ve işleyiş sorunları konusundaki görüşleri incelenmektedir. Çalışmanın son bölümünde ise, Gramsci’nin “modern prens” metaforu ile ortaya koyduğu dönüştürücü toplumsal irade sorununu “postmodern prens” metaforu çerçevesinde sürdüren güncel kuramsal çabalar incelenmektedir
