SUSTAINABILITY OF THE CURRENT DEFICIT IN TURKEY: FRACTIONAL COINTEGRATION ANALYSIS

Abstract

Simultaneous achievement of domestic and external macroeconomic equilibrium is refered as the main goal of macroeconomic policies. While domestic balance is defined as a situation where the real national income is in its potential level or close to them, and inflation rate is low and stabilization, external balance is often refered as sustainability of the current equilibrium. This paper is focused on external macroeconomic balance which is based on sustainability of the current balance. The main aim of the paper is to analize whether the current account deficits are sustainable by using the conventional and fractional cointegration methods for Turkey in 1989:Q1-2006:Q2 period. The main contribution of the study is the usage of fractional cointegration methods on determining sustainability of current deficits. The main result of the paper is that the current deficits are sustainable in Turkey

TÜRKİYE’DE CARİ AÇIĞIN SÜRDÜRÜLEBİLİRLİĞİ: PARÇALI EŞBÜTÜNLEŞME ANALİZİ

Abstract

İç ve dış makroekonomik dengenin eşanlı sağlanması makroekonomik politikaların temel amacı olarak görülmektedir. İç denge, reel milli gelirin potansiyel seviyesine veya ona yakın olduğu bir duruma yaklaşması ve enflasyon oranının düşük ve istikrarlı olması şeklinde tanımlanırken, dış denge ise genellikle cari dengenin sürdürülebilirliği ile ifade edilmektedir. Bu çalışmada ise cari dengenin sürdürülebilirliğine dayanan dış makroekonomik denge üzerinde durulmaktadır. Çalışmanın temel amacı, Türkiye için 1989:Q1-2006:Q2 döneminde cari işlemler açığının sürdürülebilir olup olmadığının geleneksel ve parçalı eşbütünleşme yöntemleriyle analiz edilmesidir. Çalışmanın katkısı, cari açıkların sürdürülebilirliğinin belirlenmesinde parçalı eşbütünleşme yöntemlerinin kullanılması olup temel sonucu Türkiye’de cari açıkların sürdürülebilir olduğu yönündedir
