The relationship between counselors’ professional dispositions and wellness

Abstract

Counselors must prioritize their own wellness to support their clients effectively. Additionally, the literature emphasizes the importance of professional dispositions as a key requirement for effective counseling. This study explored the relationship between counselors’ professional dispositions and their multidimensional wellness. To achieve this, 168 counselors were recruited online, and data were gathered using the Personal Information Form, Professional Disposition Scale for Counselors (PDSC), and the Well Star Scale-Adult Form (WSC-AF). The PDSC includes six dimensions: Diversity tolerance, Compassionate interpersonal relationships, Prosocial orientation, Positive attitude toward life, Self-awareness/self-regulation, and Openness to new experiences. The WSC-AF covers five dimensions: Life purpose and goal orientation, Cognitive wellness, Emotional wellness, Physical wellness, and Social wellness. Stepwise regression analyses identified significant predictive relationships between these dimensions. The findings demonstrate that counselors' professional dispositions significantly predict their wellness. Based on these results, it is recommended that training and support aimed at enhancing these dispositions should be provided, as they are linked to overall wellness.
