Abstract

Abstract

Progressively there is an increase in the prevalence of disordered eating attitudes and eating disorders in the society. In addition to being comorbid with many other psychopathologies, eating disorders are the psychopathology group with the highest mortality rate and are among the most important psychopathologies to be examined in this respect. The main aim of this research is to examine the relationship between eating attitudes and self-compassion and to investigate the prevalence of this relationship in a non-clinical sample by evaluating it in terms of chronic and psychological disorders. In the study, convenience sampling was used for the data collection and data was collected from a total of 145 participants between the ages of 18-65. For the data collection Demographic Information Form, Short Form of Self-Compassion Scale (SCS-SF) and Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-40) were used. Pearson Correlation Analysis and Independent Samples t test were used to analyze the date that was collected from the participants. As a result of the conducted analyses, it was found that there was a statistically significant negative relationship between disordered eating attitudes and self-compassion levels. Additionally, other conducted analyses showed that the self-compassion levels of participants diagnosed with a psychological disorder were significantly lower, while participants with a chronic disease had significantly eating attitudes that were disordered compared to participants without a psychological disorder. The findings of this study were discussed within the framework of the relevant literature.
