Kitabın amacı, ticaret çatışmalarının ve beraberinde gelen eşitsizliklerin küresel ekonomide nasıl yaratıldığına dair bir anlayış sağlamaktır. Yazarların argümanları, ticaret savaşlarının, ülkelerdeki sınıflar arasında artan eşitsizlikler yaratan, küresel ekonomiyi bozan ve uluslararası barışı tehdit eden, ülkelerdeki seçkinler ve işçiler arasındaki sınıf savaşları olduğu yönündedir.
