The Happiness of Cities in Turkey

Abstract

This study aims at determining factor that influence individuals’ happiness in Turkey. For this purpose, we have built a model that is as broad as possible and have tested this model both in Turkey in general and at the level of cities. The fact that the model uses such variables as social pressure depending on sex and income, indebtedness, satisfaction with government services, satisfaction with the individual's relations with his/her close circle, which are not included in domestic literature, and the fact that it was repeated in 81 provinces are the basic contributions of the study.The study has used the ordinal logistic regression model. According to the model results, it is possible to tell whether individuals in Turkey are happy or unhappy with similar factors in general. Optimistic, female, university-graduate individuals who can have positive relations with their near social environment and who are happy from their marriage, work, health, income, social life and public services, are seen to be happier. Whereas, individuals who are not satisfied from their marriages, unemployed, indebted individuals, crime victims, individuals who feel pressure on themselves because of their sex or income are seen as more unhappy.Applying the model to cities presents some additional data. It becomes possible to observe distribution of cities where variables are statistically meaningful or not meaningful, and in some cases where they are clustered. On the other hand, we have also observed that a positive relationship in overall Turkey
analysis, may be negative at city level or vice versa. This observation leads to the necessity of broadening analyses to the city level.

Türkiye’de İllerin Mutluluğu

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Türkiye’de bireylerin mutluluğuna etki eden faktörleri tespit etmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaçla, mümkün olduğu ölçüde geniş tutulan bir model oluşturulmuş ve bu model hem Türkiye genelinde hem de iller düzeyinde sınanmıştır. Modelde yerli literatürde içerilmeyen cinsiyete ve gelire bağlı toplumsal baskı, borçluluk, devlet hizmetlerinden memnuniyet, bireyin yakın çevresiyle ilişkilerinden duyduğu memnuniyet gibi değişkenlerin kullanılmış olması ve söz konusu modelin 81 il bazında yinelenmiş olması çalışmanın temel katkılarıdır. Çalışmamızda sıralı lojistik regresyon modeli kullanılmıştır. Model sonuçlarına göre, Türkiye’de bireylerin genel olarak benzer faktörlerden mutlu ya da mutsuz olduklarını söylemek mümkündür. Evliliğinden, işinden, sağlığından, gelirinden, sosyal hayatındanve kamusal hizmetlerden memnun olan, üniversite mezunu, yakın sosyal çevresi ile olumlu ilişkiler kuran, iyimser ve kadın bireylerin daha mutlu oldukları görülmektedir. Buna karşın evliliklerinden memnun olmayan, işsiz, borçlu, suça maruz kalan, cinsiyetinden ve gelirinden dolayı üzerinde baskı hisseden bireylerin daha mutsuz oldukları tespit edilmiştir. Modelin illere uygulanması bir takım ek bilgiler sunmaktadır. Bu sayede, değişkenlerin istatistiki olarak anlamlı ya da anlamsız oldukları illerin dağılımlarını, bazı durumlarda yığılmalarını izlemek mümkün olabilmektedir. Diğer taraftan, Türkiye geneli analizde bulunan örneğin pozitif bir ilişkinin il düzeyinde negatif olabildiği (ya da tersi) gözlenebilmektedir. Bu durum, analizlerin il düzeyine de genişletilmesi gerekliliğine işaret etmektedir.
