Türkiye’de Obezite Üzerine Sosyoekonomik Faktörlerin Etkisi ve Gelir Eşitsizliği

Abstract

Çalışmada TÜİK 2008 ve 2010 Sağlık Araştırmaları verileri kullanılarak yetişkinler için obezite üzerinde eşitsizliğe yaratan sosyoekonomik ve demografik değişkenler analiz edilmiştir. Türkiye’de obezite ile sosyoekonomik değişkenler arasında ilişkiyi değerlendirmek için, probit model yaş, eğitim, gelir, yerleşim yeri, medeni durum, meyve tüketim sıklığı, sigara kullanım sıklığı, diyabet, hipertansiyon ve genel sağlık durumu gibi açıklayıcı değişkenler ile tahmin edilmiştir. Probit model tahmin sonuçlarına bağlı olarak, zenginlerle fakirler arasında obezitenin gelirle ilişkisini değerlendirmek için çeşitli yoğunlaşma indeksleri hesaplanmıştır. Obezitenin toplam yoğunlaşma indeksi 2008 ve 2010 yılları için sırasıyla -0.3749 ve -0.3058 bulunmuştur. Bu obezitede toplam eşitsizliğin düşük gelir grubunda yoğunlaşmış olduğunu gösterir. Ayrıca bu ifade Türkiye’de obezler üzerinde zenginler lehine eşitsizlik yarattığı söylenir. Çalışmanın bulgularına göre obez olmanın yaratmış olduğu eşitsizlikte temel sorun olarak eğitim düzeyi ve gelir dağılımı görülmektedir.

Effect of Socioeconomic Factors on Obesity in Turkey and its Income Related Inequality

Abstract

This study analyses inequality in obesity for adult using TurkStat 2008 and 2010 Health Survey Data. This study specifically aims to find which socio demographic variables cause inequality among adult obese in Turkey. In order to assess the relationship between socioeconomic variables and obesity in Turkey, a probit model is estimated including explanatory variables age, education, income, location, marital status, frequency of fruit consumption, frequency of smoking, diseases (hypertension and diabetes) and general health status. Various concentration index estimated to evaluate income related distribution of obesity between poor and rich with using probit model result. The total concentration index of obesity is found as -0.3749 and -0.3058 respectively in 2008 and 2010. It shows that income inequality in obesity is concentrated among poor. In addition, it can be said that obesity will create inequality in the high income groups instead of the low income groups in the future. The level of education and income distribution are the main problems in the inequality created by obesity in Turkey.
