Empyema is still an important illness seen in children of Turkey, fourty five patients treated during the lest two years We have found that empyema usually follows pulmonary infections. Staphylococci are seen as frequently as pneumococci in our patients. The morbidity and mortality of empyema ineseared due to antibiotics resistent bateria. Surgical intervention was undertaken in treating these children. Closed drainage following tube thoracostomy was frequently used. Few of the patients so treated, required other interventions sucf as, open drainage without rib resection, or decortication.Current treatment early and late findings in empyema of childhood are presented in this study.
